The Importance of Academic Intergrity

In Taylor's University, I have been exposed to the academic integrity which is an ethical policy of academia in every subject that I took. This includes values such as avoidance of cheating or plagiarism; maintenance of academic standards; honesty and rigorous in research and academic publishing.  It helped me to understand the ethical values in all activities related to learning, teaching, and research . Academic Integrity teach me to produce work or project which has the originality derived by me from the material that I have learnt throughout my studies and research instead of cheating or plagiarizing other people’s hard work. It also helps me to re-evaluate, re-think, re-summarize, and re-phrase the source obtained as a basis to enable me to create my own work. By learning this academic integrity, it certainly improves my disciplinary knowledge as well as my academic skills. I also have been taught about how to put theories into practices.

For me, it is important to adhere to the rule of academic integrity as it will lead me to be an independent person with less supervision. Moreover, it taught me to be a trustworthy person in doing my work hence it helps me to be a respected leader who appreciate and live with those good values. Taylor’s University have outlined the importance of academic integrity amongst it fellow students to ensure we are graduated from their programs with the necessary skills required to participate successfully in the community or workforce. Besides, it helped me towards becoming a discipline person. Incidentally, this can increase the awareness amongst the students and upholding the values of honesty, trust, fairness and responsibilities.

I can apply this into my study when doing my task to avoid plagiarism. This will make me think creatively, innovatively and out of the box when completing assigned task. It taught me how to define and analyse problems to arrive at effective solutions and not manipulating other’s work by using the things that I have learnt such as summarizing, paraphrase, quoting and others.

By having the appropriate knowledge with regards to academic integrity it will lead me all the way in becoming a TGC graduate embedded with proper fundamental knowledge, skills, abilities and qualities as outlined by Taylor. A Taylor’s graduate who is equipped with TGC is not only readily adaptable to the ever-challenging working environment, but also has the ability to take on new tasks and jobs successfully. This ensures me as a student to be able to acquire and demonstrate discipline-specific knowledge, cognitive capabilities and soft skills. By learning academic integrity, it will help develop my own graduate capabilities and learn to demonstrate those important capabilities through reflection, portfolios and ultimately, a TGC Award.
